MARKOS (Daily Kos) MOULITSAS / American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin and Power Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right
Start: September 10, 2010 - 7:30pm Location:
The Booksmith
1644 Haight Street
San Francisco, California 94117
Markos Moulitsas is the founder and publisher of Daily Kos, America's largest online political community. His publications include the acclaimed Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics and Taking on the System: Rules for Radical Change in a Digital Era. He is a frequent guest on cable news and shows like Meet the Press and Real Time with Bill Maher, a weekly columnist for The Hill, and a former Newsweek contributing columnist.
America's main international enemy -- Islamic radicalism -- favors theocracy, curtails civil liberties, embraces torture, represses women, reviles homosexuality, subverts science and education, and reveres force over diplomacy. In American Taliban, Markos Moulitsas shows how the American right shares those very same traits. He argues that our domestic jihadists are a greater threat to American democracy than any Islamic terrorist.
"I can't remember a time in my life when anti-intellectualism and intolerance has been more pervasive. From America's prejudice against evolutionary science to its reactionary condemnation of a scholarly African American president, the time has never been more ripe for a book such as this, which reminds us that fanaticism isn't always an import."
-- Brett Gurewitz, Bad Religion
"It isn't possible to understand American politics now without understanding the worldview and arguments of Markos Moulitsas. If you still believe the beltway caricature of the squishy, compromising, conciliatory American left, American Taliban should disabuse you of that notion."
-- Rachel Maddow, The Rachel Maddow Show
"Markos writes with a conscience and armed with facts to let you know: no, you're not crazy. What you suspected all along was true-America's right wing lives on a myth of self-constructed lies about the Other, with a juvenile disregard for reality, and Obama's presidency has further radicalized an already radical conservative movement."
-- Janeane Garofalo, comic and actor
"Moulitsas alerts us to a clear and present danger in America: radical zealots who disregard our Constitution and our freedoms, and who disguise themselves as patriots."
-- Roger Ebert, film critic
"A thorough compendium of right-wing hypocrisy and selective memory that is either hilarious or tragic, depending on your mood. And it's all lovingly couched in outrage and profanity."
-- David Cross, I Drink for a Reason
In response to boatsie's email to SFKossacks and Bill McKibben's diary today at Dkos here is a meeting place to discuss and organize in each of our neighborhoods a participation in 10.10.10. Let us know in the comments what you are doing.
10/10/10 will be a day of work parties all over the world.
Will you join us?
In every corner of the globe, we will implement solutions to the climate crisis: from solar panels to community gardens, wind turbines to bike workshops. We'll tell leaders: "We're getting to work--what about you?" To read more about our plans for 2010, click here.
It's still early, so it's OK if you don't know all the details of your local work party. There's a list of work-party ideas at www.350.org/workparty-ideas to get things moving, but don't worry if you don't have a game-plan just yet.
If you register early, we'll be able to provide you with resources & support that can help you out along the way. We'll also try to connect you with supporters in your area who might be able to lend a hand.
#1 Organize a Tree Planting Planting trees is fun, friendly, and a great way to engage the community. And each one you plant will be a little carbon-sequestering machine for years to come. Try to shoot for planting 350 trees or more in one day! Check out this tree-planting guide from our friends at the Green Belt Movement for some tips.
#2 Go Solar Working on a solar project is a great way to demonstrate the clean energy future right in your community. Whether its installing a solar panel on a local school, building a solar cooker for your community, or putting a solar hot water heater on your house--it is a great way to work with the planet, not against it.
#3 Work on a Community Garden or an Organic Farm To get to 350, we'll need to rethink the way we produce food on the planet--moving away from industrial agriculture powered by fossil fuels, and towards small-scale, local, organic farming. Think about using your work party as a day to model this new system--maybe you can break ground on a new community garden. Or simply help out harvesting at a local farm. For more info, visit 350.org/foodandfarm
#4 Go For a Ride: Biking is a great way to get out and be visible in your community. It also demonstrate the need for improved infrastructure for our alternative modes of transportation. Think about setting up a bike repair workshop, or painting bike lanes in your community. Maybe an awareness ride of 350 miles (or kilometers) if you're feeling a bit more ambitious?
#5 Harness the Wind A local wind project can show that you're serious about building the clean energy economy. Putting up a turbine is a big project though, so you'll want to start planning this one early...
#6 Get Efficient: Energy Efficiency is often considered "low hanging fruit" when it comes to reducing carbon emissions. It's often easier and cheaper than installing renewable energy, so why not start here? Whether it's installing more efficient LED or CFL lightbulbs in your MPs office, insulating your basement, weatherizing your church or temple, or doing an energy audit on your school, efficiency can help get us on the path to 350 as soon as humanly possible (This is also likely one of the easiest ways to reduce emissions really fast -- like 10% in 2010 as our friends at the 10:10 campaign are helping folks to do).
#7 Start a Transition Town The Transition Towns project is designed to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil. By raising awareness of sustainable living and building local resilience in the near future, making your community a "transition town" can provide a solid framework for sustained action at the local level. There is even a whole existing network of communities working as Transition towns that you can connect with to learn what they are doing: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/ #8 Faith Work Connections between the world's diverse religions and the issue of global warming are numerous and strike a strong moral chord. This is a great way to gather people together who already have a community in which they discuss the big questions -- now is the chance to add global warming to the list and harness the network to start working on the solutions.
#9 Trash Clean Up Sadly, some of our iconic places aren't as pristine as we'd like. Why not leave the place better than you found it? By recycling the garbage you find, you can ensure that the embedded energy in the products gets reused--instead of decomposing over the years and sending a stready stream of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
#10 Join the 10:10 Campaign Our friends at 10:10 Global are working an ambitious project: uniting different sectors of society behind the simple idea that by working together we can achieve a 10% cut in carbon emissions in a single year, starting in 2010. Their focus is on immediate, practical action--350.org's focus is on uniting local actions for systemic change on a global level. 350.org and 10:10 are working hand in hand in 2010, and we couldn't be happier about the partnerhsip--if you want to get plugged into the 10:10 Global Campaign, just go to 1010global.org

I'm starting a new thing today, sharing my 7 year old grandson's texts with you. Of course, I think they are darling. What is amazing is that he composes them by himself, his spelling ability is amazing.
hi grandma Neeta, what are you doing today.I'm 100% sure you miss me, don'nt you?
I wrote back saying, yes I missed him.
I was geussing so.So...um how are you.good? I hope so.You are probably wondering how I am.I am great! But il be greater with you.
well then... Can we get to a nother subject.Well anyway I got $8.50 for allowence day.
Summer summer summer! O sorry.I wonder what your doing right now.im waiting for you to come. When are you going to come?
Hheelloo! grandma i wonder(oh by the way sequoia says hi!)what you will get for us. ...oh you want to play that game do ya well ok very funny.
Why dont you let me come to your house for a little bit?
Hi grandma and awesome cool nice grandpa(howis he doing by the way).Feel better real soon grandpa.from nickel pickel to grandma and grandpa.
Carnival World Buffet Dinner $23.99 plus tax includes non-alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages extra.
Meet at the restaurant NEAR THE DIAMOND CLUB ENTRANCE PROMPTLY AT 6:30PM. (The Diamond Club entrance is before you get to the main buffet entrance; directly across from the poker room.)
Okay kids, heads up, NEW PLAN!
Oke arrived at the RIO yesterday. Here is her email:
On just the off chance that dealing face to face might pay off I
talked to the Mgr. directly and he is willing to reserve and set up a
table for at least 40 to start with, he's willing to add more if needed.
I even offered some type of deposit and he said not necessary.
He will take us as a group inside a 6:30 to 6:45 window of time. We're
to group up at the Diamond Club entrance. He will then take us around
the outer part, past the line and seat us.
It's really, really important that the group knows we need to be
organized and gather up as many people as possible in that window.
it's not that he'll refuse a late comer, but we don't want to push
our luck.
I had difficulty making a group res for our Cheers & Jeers Dinner. The Harrah's group wanted me to sign a contract and leave my credit card for 50 reservations to secure tables. If people didn't show up I would have to pay for their meals. I don't know some of the people who rsvpeed and to jump thru Harrah's hoops was a little too much for me. There were many other demands like waiting outside until our entire party arrived... wtf. no.
There was no Mom N Pop accommodating like we've had in the past.
Viva La Vegas!
So I bagged that and we will have to go commando, ...the original meaning, not no underwear and do a doorbuster.
Underwear could be optional though on second thought.
Here is the plan:
Arrive early to beat competitive dinner crowd.
Vicki and I will be there early at 6pm and "try" to setup a head table and in a vicinity that can accommodate more around us. Dunno, but hoping for the best, we're like that. We'll let the hostess/host know that everyone will be asking for the Cheers & Jeers group.
Apparently they won't seat you until your entire party is there. So parties of one or two might want to wait for more at the door or group up in advance and then come in. Although certainly a deuce table is not out of the question. Dammit, we need a secret handshake, why hasn't Billy thought of this dilemma in advance?? Try to avoid pairing with teabaggers and search for our clan thoroughly if you have to wait. Ask to be seated next to us, the two bawdy women who've already caused a ruckus. We'll say to prepare themselves for a Cheers & Jeers deluge. Apparently this is one of the largest buffets in Las Vegas so we'll see about that, huh. If they can't survive the onslaught of 50 of us, well then...they've slipped down on the best rated scale I'd say. I've no idea of the logistics there. Use your best demeanor to be seated close to us.
Live blogging starts at 6:30.
Please spread this info since I don't have everyone's email.

I just wanted to be sure all potential interested people know about this event in Oakland
The 2nd national park in the U.S. remains one of the nation's greatest legacies over 100 years later. People from across the globe seek things that cannot be found elsewhere on Earth; few leave disappointed.
Let children walk with nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life, and that the grave has no victory, for it never fights. All is divine harmony.
Below I will share a few more photos, quotes, and bits of advice for anyone hoping to visit in the near future.
Cheers to norm for hosting our party yesterday at his condo in Oakland. As usual, we had a great group, delicious food and lots of jibber jabber. Thanks norm and hope the cleanup wasn't too grueling. Your new condo is beautiful! Oh, and sorry we over stayed our invited time.

I will be arriving at 5:30 PM to stake out our tables in the garden patio area. Please find our tables first and then go to the ordering counter. The menu is very reasonable. You can order dinner or just pastry and coffee.
SPECIAL NOTE: The ordering counter closes at 7PM so be sure to arrive on time to get your food and drink supply in order to last. There is a back door/gate to the garden patio area so if you are late we can let you in there, bring a snack ;) I think if you walk down the block to Gough and go right, then walk right on Ivy you should come to a parking lot with an entrance to the garden patio area. Also there is an on site wine store with excellent prices thatn include glasses to borrow and no corkage fee. nice.
Shockwave is working with California OneCare now and if you are interested in California leading the way for Single Payer you will enjoy chatting with him. Please check out the link above to see the ads by many celebrities.
We meet at Little Star Pizza on 400 Valencia at 7PM
http://www.littlestarpizza.com... Then we walk to Martuni's at 8:30PM to arrive just before 9PM.
Vicki will meet us at Martuni's at 9PM.
OMG, last minute announcement! vicki, user ID 1604 and of Cheers & Jeers fame will be in town this coming Tuesday.
The plan is to meet at Martuni's, a piano bar so vicki and Paul Hogarth can sing their guts out. If you love show tunes this event is for you.
Here is the karaoke vid from last year's NN09 DFA event, she's at 2:50 in:
And, Paul Hogarth starts the vid with Springsteen's Born to Run and is featured throughout.
Here is a screen shot of vicki from that vid so you can look for her:
That's ClammyC she is clutching to her breast, lol.
Details are extremely sketchy. vicki is traveling now and working in the Wine Country for a couple of days and flying out early Wednesday a.m.
I believe Martuni's opens at 9PM. Martuni's opens at 2PM, the piano player doesn't arrive until 9PM. We may meet for dinner before but I'm waiting to hear from vicki about when she'll be finished with business.
Stay tuned kids...

A revolution is coming - a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough - but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability.
--John F. Kennedy
You have the power to reclaim our nation's destiny. You have the power to rid Washington of the politics of money. You have the power to make right just as important as might. You have the power to give America a reason to vote again. You have the power to restore our nation to fiscal sanity and bring jobs back to our people. You have the power to fulfill Harry Truman's pledge of health care for all Americans. You have the power to give us foreign policy consistent with American values again. You have the power to take back the Democratic Party. You have the power to take our country back. --Howard Dean
I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies. I believe government has an obligation to create an even playing field for all of this country's citizens and immigrants alike. I am not a socialist. I do not seek enforced equality. However, there has to be equality of opportunity, and the private sector, left to its own devices, will never achieve this goal. --Markos Moulitsas
Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.
--John F. Kennedy
We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
--John F. Kennedy
If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
