Cross-posted at both La Vida Locavore and Daily Kos.
From my perspective this is a very special happy story. A very fond memory that is about the many joys of blogging and the privilege of knowing OrangeClouds115. Truly a story of serendipity in the electronic age and one of those very rare days when I honestly felt that if there was one perfect place to be in this world, I was there!
This is also a story of friendship, fellowship and bathing in that often elusive sense of belonging. This is a people powered politics story about forming a bond with some of my fellow Americans who are bravely working for change in this very broken nation.
This is also the story of a plate;
Below the fold is the story of another great place that blogging just took me and why that plate flew cross country with me last week. That plate is now a souvenir that has a very special meaning to me after a wonderful dinner with some terrific people. |

As y'all are likely aware, OrangeClouds115 and Eddie C, of both Daily Kos and La Vida Locavore, will be in town this weekend for Slow Food Nation. They've got a break from the conference on Sunday night. How about we show them some hospitality by greeting them at a nice dinner out?
Balancing food quality and price, I went preemptive and got a reservation at Osha Thai (819 Valencia St., in the Mission close to the 16th St. BART station) at 6 PM on Sunday, Aug. 31, for 10 people. If you'd like to go, please RSVP for yourself or yourself plus a guest. That can be either on this post or in an email to me at Gmail account simplify1789.
We can adjust the number (or even the place or time) as interest merits. According to their website, the most they can take in a group is 12, although there may be some flexibility on a Sunday. |

Inspired by a dKos diary by GreenDem: Sunday Streets in San Francisco this weekend!
Come on out this weekend to show the Republicans that we don't need cheap oil and SUVs to have a good time. This would be a great place for all you Obama t-shirt and lawnsign folks to set up shop. It's public space, in the old school way.
Perhaps we could do some tabling or outreach?
I've got a bicycle-towed car trailer that I can wrap a banner around, do mobile voter registration, etc. And/or we can do a card table.
Who's not at Burning Man?
Here's event info. |

Since Daily Kos is so important to me and, I feel, to the future of our country, I often try to "spread the word". I'm always shocked when I meet and talk to progressive and engaged people, who use the internet, and they are unaware of Daily Kos. So I talk to them and end up writing "WWW.Dailykos.com" on a slip of paper which I can only hope they keep and use.
I discussed this with Highacidity who showed me the business cards the S F Kossacks already had. We've hatched a plan whereby I will subsidize the production of a large number of new cards we can all use to introduce people to DailyKos. This way we can hone in on the
better part of more and better Democrats.
In order to universalize the cards I would like one side to be specific to S F Kossacks and the other to DailyKos in general. So I'm solicting ideas for clever slogans for each side. One I like is: A catalyst for progressive change.
Or maybe: progressive action. Any ideas are welcome. There is some slight time pressure regarding the pricing on the cards, so sooner is better than later.
Cheers from

Cross posted at La Vida Locavore.
Senses are heightened in the fresh air. And it's not every day you get to sit next to the person who planted the beans, raised the lamb, and shaped the cheese on your plate. - Jim Denevan
Jim Denevan is the visionary and artist who founded Outstanding in the Field, a group devoted to raising food awareness by touring the nation and setting an outdoor table where people meet and interact with local farmers.
On September First Outstanding in the Field will combine forces with Slow Food Nation and the now famous outdoor table will be set up in San Francisco at Delores Park.
About Outstanding in the Field;
Set between the soil and the sky, Outstanding in the Field's long, linen-draped table beckons adventurous diners to celebrate food at the source, bringing together local farmers and food artisans, chefs and winemakers to explore the connection between the earth and the food on your plate. Since its founding in 1999 by chef and artist Jim Denevan, Outstanding in the Field has hosted over 100 dinners in farmlands from Anchorage, Alaska to Nantucket, Massachusetts
About Slow Food Nation;
Slow Food Nation is a subsidiary non-profit of Slow Food USA and part of the international Slow Food movement. It was created to organize the first-ever American collaborative gathering to unite the growing sustainable food movement and introduce thousands of people to food that is good, clean and fair through enjoyable, accessible and educational activities. Slow Food Nation is dedicated to creating a framework for deeper environmental connection to our food and aims to inspire and empower Americans to build a food system that is sustainable, healthy and delicious.
With similar mission statements both groups should fit very nicely together but this gathering has the added advantage of being done a little differently than the typical Outstanding in the Field events. Unlike most urban dates, this feast will be in a public park. |

Well I've finally gone round the bend! I'm going on vacation to our place in the mountains in early October. So, you say. Well it turns out there are a number of Kossacks within an hour or so driving radius and I'm willing to host a meet-up!

I just learned that Calitics will be hosting a California Caucust at Netroots, today (Thursday) at 3 p.m., in Room 18B. For more information, go to:
http://www.calitics.com/showDi...
I just woke up (at 9:30!) so I hope I'll make it there in time (not an exaggeration--I'm SLOWLY waking up. Darn jet lag!) :)
We were at the Cheers and Jeers dinner last night, and some of us made it to the Burnt Orange gathering as well. Someone else I know will post the expose pictures of us later. We miss all of you even though we know some of you will be virtual live blogging! |

He's expected to visit our valley on Thursday July 17 according to the Napa Register
He's going to tour our wild fire-ravaged state, then attend a fundraiser at a "private residence" "in Napa". The Register asked if he might return to Meadowwood where he enjoyed a mountainbike ride in April 2006. The paper also mentioned an unspecified political event at tthe Frank Family Winery, but I kind of doubt it'll be there. According to HuffPo's Fundrace2008, there are no Frank's in Calistoga who've contributed to Bush or McCain and if it were to be there, they wouldn't tell the local news. My guess is it'll be a big Bush and or McCain donor who's (dis)graced by his visit.
He can ride, but he can't hide. One way or another, I plan to UNwelcome the Criminal-in-Chief.

U P D A T E:
I was able to reserve two tables in the main ballroom in the Austin Convention Center. Just look for our logo which is at the top of this page on table top sign holders. (Don't tell other groups as I don't want to cause any problems for Nolan.)
OK.
Please respond below if you are attending Netroots Nation 2008 in Austin this year.
I am working on reserving a table or tables for us in the big main room so we don't have to vie for space for each event and sychronize watches and such like last year.
You just show up and have a seat. Voila!
I need to make a table sign or signs that hopefully remains at our site the entire event.
Anyway, please respond below so I know how many SFKossacks will be there.
Also respond with any needs or concerns you have.
I am so looking forward to this event.

(For copy with links, cross-posted at DailyKos http://www.dailykos.com/story/...
Thousands of firefighters from across California, and some from out of state, will be seeing fireworks tomorrow, but not the fun kind they would like to see. Nor will they have a chance to relax at BBQs or picnics with family and friends. That's because they will be on the front lines fighting the countless wildfires that continue to burn in various parts of California and other states, the biggest currently in the Big Sur area (Los Padres National Forest.)
Tomorrow the firefighters my city will hold their annual pancake breakfast, a fundraiser for their firemen's fund. The breakfast is in conjunction with our county's big 4th of July parade, which attracts local dignitaries, service groups, and performances from the likes of {ugh} the Stanford "band".
With that inspiration, I'd like to hold a virtual "pancake breakfast" fundraiser for firefighters and other groups involved in helping fire victims.

I realize people are strapped for money these days, what with the state of the economy, pleas for helping flood and tornado victims in the midwest, as well as contributions to candidates (especially Darcy Burner, herself a fire victim.) However, if you can spare a few bucks, listed below are some groups that help fire victims (human, animal, and/or plant.) Note that some of the groups below need volunteers as well, so if you can't spare money, perhaps you have a few spare hours to give them. |

If you saw the Diary by nyceve http://www.dailykos.com/story/...
then you already have heard about the June 19th rally at Moscone West Convention Center, Howard at 4th Street, San Francisco at noon.
If you can break away for a hour look for like minded kossacks near around or under an orange flag.
I'll try to post more on dkos Monday and Tuesday. Also I am sure nyceve will have more so I will also try to hit her Diary with follow-up comments as well as the open threads. |

San Francisco Bay area bully Cargill, Inc. now threatens to take back some of its salt ponds and go home, in retaliation for environmentalists' opposition to a proposed real estate development. With environmentalists trying to qualify a November ballot measure that could block open-space development, Cargill and real estate development firm DMB Associates are telling Redwood City residents that if they don't support building homes and commercial offices on the 1,433-acre site as well as wetlands restoration, the company will continue to harvest salt indefinitely.
A DMB official who asked not to be named denied that the announcement is a response to the environmentalists' ballot proposal. http://www.mercurynews.com/val... |

| What We Are About |
|
A revolution is coming - a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough - but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability.
--John F. Kennedy
You have the power to reclaim our nation's destiny. You have the power to rid Washington of the politics of money. You have the power to make right just as important as might. You have the power to give America a reason to vote again. You have the power to restore our nation to fiscal sanity and bring jobs back to our people. You have the power to fulfill Harry Truman's pledge of health care for all Americans. You have the power to give us foreign policy consistent with American values again. You have the power to take back the Democratic Party. You have the power to take our country back. --Howard Dean
I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies. I believe government has an obligation to create an even playing field for all of this country's citizens and immigrants alike. I am not a socialist. I do not seek enforced equality. However, there has to be equality of opportunity, and the private sector, left to its own devices, will never achieve this goal. --Markos Moulitsas
Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.
--John F. Kennedy
We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
--John F. Kennedy
If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
