We all met at Frjtz on Valencia in San Francisco.

I arrived to find early birds Jotter and Laughing Planet having a beer.

Laughing Planet and lineatus, these two are not in the group shot above. lineatus had to leave early to catch a lecture by Jeffrey Toobin and Laughing Planet was kind enough to drive her over before his long drive home.

Speaking of long drives, it's time for our Road Warrior Awards:

Mr. & Mrs. side pocket (+maggiejean) 150 miles round trip
LeftCoast and LeftyLimblog aka RedMeatDem aka Ruff Limblog 96 miles round trip.
Laughing Planet 70 miles round trip
rfall (+ oke and Angry Mouse) 67 miles round trip

exmearden arrives! (my new camera was on wrong setting or on the correct setting of blurry. I would normally delete such bad pics but no one else got exme coming in the door. Here's hoping a collage with the theme of a blurry welcome makes a statement.)

I took the same photo but thought it would be funny to leave the red eye correction alone. Doesn't she look angrier? Frickin' laser beam eyes I tell ya'. Watch out! She's so pretty I thought she could handle it. Hope I don't get a front page rant on making her mad...

Ruff Limblog and leftcoast would like to attend... (6.40 / 5)
If it's near a Bart station.  :)

wild horses could not keep me away (6.25 / 4)
please i'd love be there.

We'll try....consider us maybes (6.00 / 4)
I'll get back to you by Saturday...

consider me a maybe, too (6.00 / 5)

Consider me a maybe three (6.00 / 4)
There's a possibility I might be in San Francisco that day - with all the work bringing the Hetch Hetchy reservoir system back online I may be able to get there if they assign me to Sunol or somewhere along the San Joaquin area.

My sorrow, when she's here with me, thinks these dark days of autumn rain are beautiful as days can be; she loves the bare, the withered tree; she walks the sodden pasture lane. - Robert Frost

So sad that we won't be able to make it (6.33 / 3)
We'll be out of town that week, hanging out with our youngest daughter.  Hope everyone has a great time!

And all my love to exmearden (6.33 / 3)

[ Parent ]
hope you are well (6.33 / 3)
i'll make sure exmearden gets your message!

[ Parent ]
Thanks, dada! (6.00 / 3)
I appreciate your offer to convey to exmearden my sadness at having to miss her visit to SF (damn!). Hope all is good in your life.

[ Parent ]
life is good (6.00 / 2)
a couple of things could be better.
the photo show went brilliantly.
hopefully our schedules will coordinate soon??????

[ Parent ]
btw i will be late to dinner (6.33 / 3)
i have a board meeting
but i will be there.
just a little fyi..

I would love to join you guys (6.00 / 3)
And I am in the city, so it should be easy for me to get there.

Any type of food requests? Are you trying to make this BART friendly?

Definitely BART friendly (6.00 / 3)
Lineatus, my restaurant guru is helping me pick a place.  Should be able to announce soon.  Thanks tho.

[ Parent ]
A quieter place this time would be good... (6.00 / 2)
It was hard to talk at the Mexican place in the Mission.

[ Parent ]
Anyone want to see Jeffrey Toobin after dinner? (6.00 / 3)
I have tickets to see him at City Arts and Lectures at the Herbst at 8pm, in conversation with Roy Eisenhart.  (He's always interesting and usually has a lot about the Supreme Court.)  My friend won't be able to attend due to travel, so I've got an extra ticket (no cost to you).  Depending on where we dine, we'd need to leave dinner roughly 7:40-7:45 to get there.

I'll be there! (6.00 / 4)
I can't wait to meet my former fellow Pacific Northwesterner.  exmearden, please bring some rain with you. :-)

It appears she filled your request. (6.50 / 2)

[ Parent ]
Sure bet, I'll be there. (6.25 / 4)

I'll be there (6.25 / 4)
Thanks!

Hi all... (6.20 / 5)
I'm looking forward to this! Thank you all for responding to the invite, and thank you, navajo, for doing this.

I suspect Valencia has changed dramatically since my days in SF (1979-1982). I managed a little jazz duo who used to practice in an old mortuary on Valencia for a very brief while. The morticians' prep tables and sluicing channels were still in place in a large white-tiled room at the back of the old building when we practiced there...shudder.

I'll be there at 6pm, with luck!

it will be great to see you (6.33 / 3)
and i will bet dollar to donut that the valencia street scene has both changed a million times over since you were last here and is still exactly the same as when you left it.

it is becoming the hub of some hip and really good food places but alas part of the mission was forever pushed out of the mission by the dot com rise and then fall...

[ Parent ]
Jeez, the SF Kossacks will let anybody in! (6.50 / 4)
Hell they let homogenius and me in, wtf?  That scoundrel, dada, too? ZOMFG!

Seriously, exme, I sure wish I could make it; I'd love to see you again and do some serious laughing.

[ Parent ]
it is under construction right now (6.33 / 3)
They are doing a project to expand the sidewalk and kill a lane on the street, adding trees and ultimately a sidewalk cafe scene. It will be great!

This is the hipster neighborhood these days, with taco joints next door to $80 a person restaurants. Crazy, but I love it here.

We still have that mortuary if it is the one I am thinking of, but I doubt they rent it out to bands these days. LOL

[ Parent ]
I will be there (6.33 / 3)
and most likely Mary will be, as well.

Count me in. (6.50 / 4)
Think I'll order the muscles.  Oh, wait..mussels?  Nevermind.

lol .................................................n/t (6.00 / 3)

[ Parent ]
maggiejean looks forward (6.00 / 3)
to attending.   ;-)

Have room for another? (6.00 / 3)
Looks like you are going over the 15 limit ;)

Well on the other hand, it seems I'm getting a cold. I (6.00 / 3)
don't want to breathe on exmearden then.  Oh well, maybe next time I can come.

no worries - (6.00 / 3)
I've been off chemo for over six weeks and my most recent cell counts were fine (or they will be until I start up again).

Don't worry on my account, but rather - take care of yourself.

[ Parent ]
Well I'll be a last minute check it out then. Seems (6.00 / 3)
so far the cold isn't too bad, and maybe it'll be okay by then.  I have to have a port put in Friday so I'm hoping they'll do it regardless.

[ Parent ]
good luck with the port... (6.00 / 3)
if I may ask, will your port be a chest port?  Make sure they use a hypoallergenic, sensitive skin type of adhesive to cover it. I developed a septic skin infection from the bandage over mine afterwards which was then aggravated further during my first port access for chemo.

I have a nasty little scar that looks like an inch by three inch burn scar about three inches above my port. I always request that they use that special adhesive cause it itches like the devil still.

Ack. An interesting journey.

Hope to see you Wednesday.

[ Parent ]
We're not going to make it this time.... (6.00 / 2)
Busy season and all that...weeknights are so not good for me until end of April.

Have a great time everyone!

thanks for letting us know (6.00 / 1)
was just getting ready to email you.

[ Parent ]
Can you squeeze in two more? (6.00 / 2)
If so I'd love to RSVP for myself and Bustergirl -- it will be nice to meet some of you!

Oh, this will be fun! (6.00 / 2)
And right around the corner from my place!

Can't wait to see you guys!

Sorry the weather is not nicer for exmearden this week though.

Kim, did you ever make it there? (6.00 / 1)
I left a little before 8, was sorry not to get a chance to say hello.  Maybe next time...

[ Parent ]
I talked to Kim today and she came down with a bad fever that (0.00 / 0)
day and is still ill. So no, she didn't make it.

I told her we missed her smiling face.

[ Parent ]
Just seeing this now (6.00 / 2)
I might be able to make it, probably not before 7 pm.  Depends on traffic.

LOVE Frjtz!!!

Well you are all there and I am here :(. I opted for a (6.00 / 1)
four-hour nap instead, sadly.  Sometimes you gotta listen to the body. I am really sorry I missed out.  I was looking forward to it, but it didn't make a lot of sense.  I pretty much have my typical "end of the cold laryngitis" too.  Great for conversation ;).

and thanks for the hypoallergenic tape tip, exmeardon.  I already ordered some in the pre-op registration.

Thank you all... (6.25 / 4)
I can't adequately express my gratitude in seeing all of you. I had such a fine time last night - what more could a body want? Good food, good beer, a welcoming environment, and the best group of folks on the planet!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We are off today to see Alcatraz - and what do you know? It's a sunny day!  Life is good.

-exme

It was a great dinner exme and so nice that you (6.00 / 2)
could visit us.

My photo diary will go up either Saturday or Sunday and please let me know when you'll be available to be in the comments. Just reviewing some of the pics and they are super fun.

What We Are About

A revolution is coming - a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough - but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability.
--John F. Kennedy

You have the power to reclaim our nation's destiny. You have the power to rid Washington of the politics of money. You have the power to make right just as important as might. You have the power to give America a reason to vote again. You have the power to restore our nation to fiscal sanity and bring jobs back to our people. You have the power to fulfill Harry Truman's pledge of health care for all Americans. You have the power to give us foreign policy consistent with American values again. You have the power to take back the Democratic Party. You have the power to take our country back.
--Howard Dean

I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies. I believe government has an obligation to create an even playing field for all of this country's citizens and immigrants alike. I am not a socialist. I do not seek enforced equality. However, there has to be equality of opportunity, and the private sector, left to its own devices, will never achieve this goal.
--Markos Moulitsas

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.
--John F. Kennedy

We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
--John F. Kennedy

If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
