SF Kossacks - Community!

I was inspired by our SFKossack Shanikka's REC LISTED diary about the Giving Tree at her office and suggesting that we give of our time at Food Banks or Shelters.  I'm sure there are many places we as a group can serve.

I would be more inclined to give of my personal time if I had buddies to go with me.  I think it would be a great idea if we start organizing a monthly or every other month event where a subgroup of us meets to serve together in our communities.

And since we are spread all over, let's have ONE event each month or every other month in a different town with a different subgroup of SFKossacks.

To start let's identify possible places to meet and work. We'll pick one a month or every other month to start.  We'll need a captain to volunteer for each event to interface with the charity, gather SFKossacks and communicate the date, time and directions to the subgroup.

I like this idea because it's not asking for you to donate money, it is much easier for me to donate time than money.

So, tell me in the comment thread:
What are the local community projects where we could meet as subgroups and give of our time? (then grab a beer afterward ;)

Also tell us if you do this already on your own and if you'd like some SFKossack buddies to join you next time.

Also a project could be like the one FFDAR suggested recently.  Maybe this could be January's project.

Request for a future "fundraiser" related to NFTT

I live near the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital (which has a section treating brain injuries).  They collect clothing (remember the female vets), toiletries, magazines, and snacks for the vets treated at the facility, as well as potentially homeless vets.   http://www.palo-alto.med.va.go...
But if anyone just "has" to unload some extra items now, I'll be glad to transport them in time for the holidays.  ;-)

I'm down with this, I really need to clean out my closet.

For DECEMBER'S SFKOSSACK SERVICE PROJECT, may I suggest coming with me to Shanikka's office in East Palo Alto and pick a name off her Giving Tree.  We'll empty that tree of names, dammit.

Also, thank you to everyone who donated already this December to the side pocket's Heifer, Int. project.  You ROCK and if you can come with me to Shanikka's office you DOUBLE ROCK!

Shelter Network in San Mateo Co. (6.00 / 3)
has a variety of programs- soup kitchen, homeless shelters, transitional housing, thrift store. http://www.shelternetwork.org/...

For the holidays they also have wrapping parties where people wrap presents for their "clients" - http://www.shelternetwork.org/...
----
Second Harvest Food Bank has a location in San Carlos (across the street from the soon-to-be former-Tesla design building.)  Not sure what volunteer oportunities are at that spot, but IIRC they have a big warehouse in San Jose area where they have groups help sort food.

I was going to recommend Second Harvest Food Bank also. (6.00 / 2)
I've dropped food off there before.  The warehouse in San Jose sounds like a possibililty.

Great job FFDAR!

I love this idea! (6.00 / 2)
I am not sure of opportunities here in SF at food banks and such, seems to me when I have tried to do this in the past they did not need my help as they had plenty of regular volunteers. (which is a good thing!)

But if someone knows of something here I am willing to join in and help out!

I'm down. (6.00 / 2)
The peninsula works best for me.

What We Are About

A revolution is coming - a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough - but a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character, we cannot alter its inevitability.
--John F. Kennedy

You have the power to reclaim our nation's destiny. You have the power to rid Washington of the politics of money. You have the power to make right just as important as might. You have the power to give America a reason to vote again. You have the power to restore our nation to fiscal sanity and bring jobs back to our people. You have the power to fulfill Harry Truman's pledge of health care for all Americans. You have the power to give us foreign policy consistent with American values again. You have the power to take back the Democratic Party. You have the power to take our country back.
--Howard Dean

I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies. I believe government has an obligation to create an even playing field for all of this country's citizens and immigrants alike. I am not a socialist. I do not seek enforced equality. However, there has to be equality of opportunity, and the private sector, left to its own devices, will never achieve this goal.
--Markos Moulitsas

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.
--John F. Kennedy

We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
--John F. Kennedy

If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt
